Madelyn Jordon Fine Art "Susan Wides: Selected Works"

PRESS RELEASE

SUSAN WIDES: “Selected Works”

June 3 – July 30, 2011

Madelyn Jordon Fine Art is pleased to present its first solo exhibition of the highly regarded New York artist, SUSAN WIDES, entitled “Susan Wides: Selected Works” from June 3 – July 30, 2011 .An artist reception will be held Thursday, June 23, 2011 from 6-8PM. The artist will be present and the public is invited. Previews and private showings are by appointment only.

The exhibition of photographs looks at 13 selected works from several of Wides’s most popular series created over the past 14 years, “Kaaterskill,” “Mannahatta,” “Arts & Entertainment,” and “Bubbles.” The photographs feature Wides’s signature “tilt-shift” practice, employing a 4 X 5 view camera, and offer fresh perspectives on city and country environments of New York. An innovator in the arena of this now popular photographic style, Wides presents grand and dynamic spaces, rendering them majestic by a technique that allows her to shift the focal plane of the lens. The artist considers the subjectivity of vision in relation to time and memory in her lush scenes of upstate, and she slows down a city most notable for its bustle, leaving chosen details hazy to isolate elements that are generally overlooked. As Wides documents iconic city landmarks, she pushes the viewer to consider layers of human participation in communal spaces by transforming public activities into intimate scenes. The viewer is immersed into her image through a controlled use of color and light. By manipulating perception, the artist ensures an exchange between the viewer and the dramatic, almost atmospheric, image. One must get physically close to examine which details the artist has chosen to keep in sharp focus. The conscious and unconscious pulse of New York is captured, providing a seductive approach on memory, silence, space and community.

Susan Wides: “Selected Works” is the artist’s first solo show in Westchester County and coincides with Wides’s highly anticipated solo exhibition at the Hudson River Museum, entitled “Susan Wides: Hudson Valley, Mannahatta to Kaaterskill,” on view from May 28 – Sept. 11, 2011. In that exhibition, Wides created a series of photographs using Westchester’s verdant yet troubled landscape and iconic landmarks as fodder for her provocative works.

Susan Wides divides her time between New York City and Catskill, NY, exploring the characters of both places and the drama of environments. The Cincinnati-raised photographer, who comes from a lineage of woman artists, attended Indiana University and Kenyon College, studying with Henry Holmes Smith. Her work is included in numerous public collections, including The International Center of Photography (NY), The Brooklyn Museum (NY), The Norton Museum of Art (FR) and The Art Museum of Princeton University (NJ). She has been featured in major publications, including Art in America, The Washington Post, New York Times, Village Voice, and Harper’s Magazine.
